Condition: This set is in Very Good Condition. It is like new except for slight wear to the edge of the box and a small ink mark on the spine of Volume 1. The pages are clean and unmarked.

A two-volume boxed set covering the history and architecture of the White House.

From the author's Introduction:

"The White House is built as much of personalities as it is of stones. Although events there do center on a single individual, they are influenced by many others. Each, in some respects, may be a king in his own realm. This has been true from the beginning and will remain so.

"The White House Historical Association commissioned this work in its 15th year of existence. It sees it published in its 25th year. The only specification given me was to write a history of the President's House. I have written it as I have seen fit, with the enthusiasm and encouragement of the association, which, acting solely on faith in me, has supported the project far beyond the 250 pages we originally projected.

"The reader will find here a history of the changing presidential stage and the genesis of one of our most revered national symbols, which, at its core, remains what it has always been, a house. These volumes take you from the time and place that saw the beginning of the story--the Peerce farm in the Maryland countryside 195 years ago--to the mid-20th century, when the White House, in an almost total reconstruction, assumed its present form."
